Pollination of lupin: Can we make meat-replacements even more sustainable?

Some Dutch producers are trying to use locally produced lupin as the basis for the production of meat-replacements. By using lupin instead of imported soy, the ecological footprint of meat-replacements can be greatly reduced! Unfortunately, the yield in the Netherlands is rather unpredictable and variable in quality, where the lack of the right pollinators for lupin can play an important role.

How does pollination of lupin take place?

Flowers of plants have been evolving for millions of years to design the shape, colour and size of the flowers in such a way that they attract the right pollinators for cross-pollination of the plants. An ingenious system makes sure that lupin is pollinated properly: the weight of a pollinator pushes the petals of the flowers downwards, revealing the stamen and pushing the pollen on the belly of the pollinator and hereby making sure that the pollen gets to the next flower (see also the video). Because of this, lupin is depending on the right pollinator, mostly bumblebees, which are heavy enough to push down the petals. However, honeybees are placed in the crop fields to ensure pollination. In contrast to bumblebees, honeybees are too light to fully push down the petals. Because of this the yield is unpredictable and the quality is variable, hampering the food production.

Who am I?

My name is Thijs Fijen and I would like to study how the cultivation of lupin, the Dutch ‘soy’ can be made more profitable and sustainable by specifically studying the role of bumblebees. A major motive in my work is that I really like to look for opportunities to combine sustainable food production and conservation of biodiversity. I am paying a lot of attention in this in my doctoral research, and recently I was awarded the ‘Zilveren Parnassia’, a prestigious award for talented young researches in nature conservation. This project is particularly exciting for me: important pollinators of lupin are bumblebees, amongst the extinct large garden bumblebee (Bombus ruderatus), which might profit from an increased lupin surface. When we can grow more, and better quality lupin, both farmers and bumblebees can benefit. A real win-win situation!

Me in action in Italy! Here we monitor where the crop pollinators are before crop flowering, so that we can better protect and manage these areas.

Ok, but what do you want to do?

As a first step, I want to show that the pollination by bumblebees indeed increases the yield and quality of lupin. I want to do this for as many lupin varieties as possible, so that this research may readily be used in the selection of better varieties. At the same time we then show the importance of promoting and conserving bumblebees around arable fields!

Bumblebee pollination increases lupin yield

I can proudly present that the research that you have made possible has resulted in a scientific article. The main conclusions: bumblebee pollination can increase the protein crop yield up to 40%. That are huge improvements, and that for a species that was considered self-pollination. We also tried to find nectar in the lupins, but couldn't find anything. That is important to know, because nectar is the fuel which makes bumblebees buzz, and farmers should make sure plenty is available in the surroundings. The pollen that bumblebees collect is for their larvae, and lupin produces plenty of pollen.  The scientific article can be read and downloaded for free here.  We will continue our studies. This year we will grow several hectares of lupin in the south of Limburg. There we are going to study the effect of lupin cultivation on bumblebee populations. So, can lupin cultivation, which is depending on bumblebees, also contribute to bumblebee population growth? Let's find out!

We have started!

It's spring, and we have started the experiment! We have worked hard last week to fill all the pots (900 in total) with sand to prepare them for sowing. This afternoon I could see the first real leaves of some of the seedlings. The plants can grow slowly and steadily untill we move them in the open fields for pollination just before flowering. Ultimately, we have sown 10 different varieties of both blue and white lupin. When the plants are about to flower, we will move them to 15 locations with different background populations of bumblebees. In this way we can have a look what happens to the yield with more or less bumblebees. Very exciting to see what will happen!

Lupin is a fantastic plant, and also as a crop it has great potential. We have three species of lupin that can be grown as a crop in the Netherlands: blue lupin (Lupinus angustifolius), white lupin Lupinus albus) and yellow lupin (Lupinus luteus). The English names refer to the colour of the flowers, but it is confusing that blue lupin can have white flowers and the white lupin can have blue flowers. It is therefore best to look at the shape of the leaves for identification. The lupins grown in the Netherlands originate from the Mediterranean area.

Lupines are legumes (Fabaceae). Like many legumes, lupines are capable of fixing nitrogen by cooperating with bacteria. Because of this symbiosis with nitrificating bacteria, they require much less fertiliser than other crops, a great benefit!

Pollinators are attracted to flower for two reasons: nectar and pollen. Nectar is for the energy, the suger on which they can fly; pollen is the food for their offspring. However, lupin is again special: it does not produce, or only very little nectar! Pollinators that visit lupin are there for the pollen. You can imagine that a field full of lupin has a great potential for large numbers of offspring.
